    All Music Guide Review

Released to coincide with the publication of Hag's autobiography, -My House of Memories, For the Record: 43 Legendary Hits is a lavish double-disc set of re-recordings of his biggest hits. With co-producer Lou Bradley, Haggard wisely keeps things spare, simple, and direct, letting the 1999 version of the Strangers, along with a number of studio musicians, treat these songs gracefully. Haggard's voice isn't what it used to be, but it's not bad, either, and he turns in respectable, enjoyable renditions throughout the album. Some listeners may find it to be a little disappointing that there are no real revelations here, but the music is always entertaining, and the duets -- with Willie Nelson, Alabama, Brooks & Dunn, and Jewel, whose inclusion may be surprising, but she acquits herself nicely -- are all strong. Of course, it doesn't function as a substitute for Haggard's classic original recordings, but longtime fans will likely find this to be a warm, enjoyable stroll through the past with one of country's all-time greats. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide
