Review
"This is not your typical rap album, this is a soundtrack to your success," rapper Killer Mike boldly states on the first track of his newest release, I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind Vol. 2. While listening to this disc may not directly lead you to riches beyond your wildest dreams, I Pledge Allegiance… will move your ass with plenty of thumpin' beats and in-your-face lyrics. The use of church organ, piano and a bit of funk guitar adds an organic vibe to the record, but aside from that, the overall delivery is pretty commonplace for the hip-hop genre. Killer Mike's vow that this isn't your everyday rap album comes in his message of perseverance and self-belief.
Recalling the influence of rap pioneers like Chuck D and Ice Cube, Killer Mike delivers a commanding performance meant to motivate his listeners to stand up against conformity and create their own successes. Speaking of Ice Cube, the legend hooks up with Mike for the super-charged civil rights anthem "Pressure." Chamillionaire steps in to talk shit on "Big Money, Big Cars." Other inspired tracks come in the form of "God In The Building" and "2 Sides," which sees lending his smooth vocals to the song.
I Pledge Allegiance To The Grind Vol. 2 takes me back to rap's heyday when artists such as the aforementioned Ice Cube and Tu-Pac had something to say, and goddamnit, you were gonna listen. With a 6'5'', 300 lb. frame, my money says you're going to listen to what Killer Mike has to say as well. Besides that, this is one slammin' album.
